Common questions about Google snippets

What is a SERP snippet?
A SERP snippet is the preview of your web page in the Google search results (search engine results pages). It consists of the blue page title, the meta description below it and the URL. An optimized snippet increases the click-through rate (CTR) and brings more visitors to your page.

How long may the meta title be?
Google truncates titles wider than 600 pixels. Since letters have different widths (a "W" needs more space than an "i"), there's no exact character limit. As a rule of thumb, 55 to 60 characters is the optimal range to make sure the title is displayed in full.

How long should the meta description be?
For the meta description, about 920 pixels are available on the desktop, a little less on mobile. That usually corresponds to about 150 to 160 characters. If the text is longer, it's shortened with "...". Important: Google doesn't always use the meta description, but often generates its own snippets from the page content.

Why doesn't Google show my title?
Google often rewrites titles and descriptions when they don't match the search query optimally or when Google believes it has found a better passage on the page. Make sure your title describes the page's content precisely and isn't overloaded with keywords ("keyword stuffing").
